Q: What is a Dental Filling?
A: A dental filling is a dental restoration where a dental restorative material is used to restore a missing tooth surface(s) caused by caries or some form of external physical damage to the surface. It is often used as an aesthetic restorative procedure as well. Fillings are performed as: direct restorations, where dental restorative material is applied directly to the tooth surface; or an an indirect restoration, where it is fabricated externally and later applied to the tooth surface. There are also a variety of materials used for fillings including metallic alloys, composite resins and tooth-colored dental composites.
